The origin of the Broad Town horse is unclear. A farmer called William Simmonds claimed to have cut it in 1864 but a young boy who helped him later said that they had in fact scoured an already existing figure which was at least fifty years old at the time. The horse is 18 metres high and 24 metres long and an interesting feature is that Simmonds had plans to enlarge it over the years. Luckily he was not able to do this for long since he had to sell his farm before the horse had completely grown out of shape.
