The Sutton Bank horse, near the village of Kilburn in Yorkshire, was cut in 1857. It was a school project carried out by local children and their teacher who wanted to imitate the white horses from the south of England. The horse is 108 metres by 75. However, the hill where it was cut is not chalk but clay and the figure had to be whitewashed to be visible from the valley. Today, sacks of chalk chipping have been
laid on the horse to ensure its colour.
