Richard De La Wych was born in Droitwich in 1197 and educated in Paris. He studied theology in Orleans and was later elected Bishop of Winchester in 1245. This election made the English king furious. Richard travelled to Lyon where the Pope, Innocent IV, consecrated him. Now Richard had a title but he didn’t have a diocese. He lived on charity and hospitality. He died in 1253. He is now patron saint of Sussex.
