Merton College is said to be haunted by the ghost of Francis Winderbank, a colonel who was killed after surrendering to Oliver Cromwell in 1645. A very special ghost indeed who seems to be missing the lower part of his legs. Suggestion was made that he could, in fact, be walking on the original floor which level is lower than the floor today.
