Oaten Hill was the scene of the execution of the Oaten Hill Martyrs. The men, three priests and a layman, had been sent from Rheims, in France, to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I and re-establish the catholic faith. Although travelling under false identities, they were arrested, brought to Canterbury, hanged, drawn and quartered on Oaten Hill. Pope Pius XI beatified them in 1929. ~~ Oaten Hill fut le lieu d’exécution de quatre envoyés français venus de Reims avec pour mission d’assassiner la reine Elizabeth I et de rétablir la religion catholique en Angleterre.
