The cathedral of Chichester had a troubled history. It was built in 1091 in replacement of an older construction. It was consecrated in 1108 but a fire destroyed it in 1114. In 1187 another fire devastated the cathedral and a second reconstruction began. The cathedral had a bell tower but it collapsed in 1410 and a separate tower was built next to the main building. Later a spire was added to the cathedral but in 1861 it collapsed during a thunderstorm and had to be rebuilt. ~~ La cathédrale de Chichester a eu une histoire troublée. Elle fut construite en 1091 à l’emplacement d’un ancien édifice et consacrée en 1108. Elle fut détruite par le feu d’abord en 1114 puis en 1187. En 1410 le clocher s’effondra et une tour de remplacement fut construite à côté du corps principal. La nef fut couronnée par une flèche mais elle s’effondra en 1861 lors d’une tempête et dut être reconstruite.
