In the Middle Ages, the south-eastern part of Chichester belonged to the archbishop. It was called the Palantine. It meant “of the palace” because it belonged to the palace of the archbishop. It was later reduced to “Pallant”. ~~ Au Moyen-Age le quart sud-est de la ville appartenait à l’archevêque. C’était le quartier de Palantine. «Palantine» signifie «du palais» car l’endroit appartenait au palais de l’archevêque. L’usage aidant, le nom se réduisit en «Pallant».
