Richard De La Wych was born in Droitwich in 1197 and educated in Paris. He studied theology in Orleans and was later elected Bishop of Chichester in 1245. This election made the English king furious. Richard travelled to Lyon where the Pope, Innocent IV, consecrated him. Now Richard had a title but he didn’t have a diocese. He lived on charity and hospitality. He died in 1253. He is now patron saint of Sussex. ~~ Richard De La Wych naquit à Droitwich en 1197 et fut étudiant à Paris. Il étudia la théologie à Orléans et fut élu évêque de Chichester en 1245, ce qui agaça fortement le roi d’Angleterre qui lui refusa le poste. Il alla voir le pape Innocent IV à Lyon et ce dernier consacra son titre. Richard avait donc un titre mais pas de diocèse et dut se résoudre à vivre de charité. Il mourut en 1253 et est maintenant reconnu comme saint patron du Sussex.
