The Bishop's Palace was built in the late 12th century by Hugh of Lincoln. At the time it was one of the most important buildings in England. The chapel and entrance tower were built by Bishop William of Alnwick, who modernised the palace in the 1430s. Henry VIII and James I stayed at the palace at the time of its splendour. Unfortunately the palace was sacked and partially destroyed by royalist troops in 1648, during the Civil War.
