The Norman House, at the corner of Steep Hill and Christ's Hospital, was built in the 12th century over the west terminal of the Bail Ditch when it was filled in 1138. Christ's Hospital, also called “The blue coat school”, was founded in 1602 by Dr. Richard Smith, to educate 12 poor boys. Subsequent donations made the institution so rich that, in 1815, it was able to welcome 100 boys, from much wealthier families.

La Maison Normande, au coin de Steep Hill et de Christ's Hospital, a été construite au XII siècle sur les remblais du Bail Ditch quand il fut comblé en 1138. Christ's Hospital, qui porte aussi le nom d'école des blouses bleues, fut fondé en 1602 par le docteur Richard Smith dans le but d'éduquer douze garçons de famille pauvre. Les donations qui découlèrent furent si importantes qu'en 1815 l'école fut en mesure d'accueillir cent garçons de familles beaucoup moins pauvres...
