The Gower Memorial is situated in Bancroft Gardens. This group of five bronze statues represents William Shakespeare on a seat surrounded by four of his most famous characters : Hamlet, Prince Hal, Falstaff and Lady Macbeth. The memorial was erected in 1888. It was designed and offered to the town by Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower. Gower was the youngest son of the second Duke of Sutherland. He was a sculptor, a politician, an author, an art critic and a friend to Oscar Wilde. ~~ Le Gower Memorial, dans les jardins de Bancroft est un groupe de cinq statues de bronze représentant William Shakespeare entouré de quatre de ses héros les plus célèbres : Hamlet, le Prince Hal, Falstaff et Lady Macbeth. Il a été offert à la ville par Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower en 1888. Gower était le fils cadet du duc de Sutherland. C’était un politicien mais aussi un sculpteur, un écrivain, un critique d’art et un ami d’Oscar Wilde.
