Katherine is the native town of two of the most famous institutions of the australian bush, the School of the Air and the Flying Doctors. The Flying Doctors Service was founded after the story of John Darcy was revealed to the public. John had been brought to the post office of an isolated village after an accident. The nearest doctor was in Katherine, 800 km away. A morse SOS was sent but, for Darcy, time was running out. The post master then reached another doctor in Perth, 3000 km the other way, and an operation was decided. Darcy was drunk with whisky and strapped onto a table. The postmaster operated with a kitchen knife following the doctor’s instructions which he received and sent by morse code between the cuts. With all the whisky gone, sterilisation was done with kitchen salt. Meanwhile, the doctor from Katherine was on his way, travelling by car, then camel, then on foot. Le postier opéra avec un couteau en suivant les instructions du docteur reçues en morse entre chaque incision. Tout le whisky ayant été consommé il stérilisa les plaies avec du sel. Pendant ce temps le docteur de Katherine était en route, en voiture, puis en chameau, puis à pied. Quand il arriva, dix jours plus tard. Darcy était mort.
