Gonville Caius was founded as Gonville Hall, in 1348, by Edmund Gonville. By the sixteenth century, the college had fallen into disrepair and the physician John Caius provided the money for a refoundation and associated his name to the institution.

Gonville Caius College porta d’abord uniquement le nom de Gonville en hommage à son créateur Edmund Gonville. Au XVIème siécle le collège avait perdu et sa splendeur et sa réputation. Il fut alors repris en main par le physicien John Caius qui en profita pour accoler son nom à celui du fondateur de l’institution.
