Buttermarket is the heart of the city. It is more than 800 years old but the name only dates from 200 years ago. Before that, the enclosed area facing Christchurch Gate was known as “The Bullstake”. It was used as a cattle market and a place where bulls were tied and baited with dogs. A cruel game which was abolished in the early 1800s. On your right is the entrance to the Cathedral with Mercery Lane on your left, Sun Street in front of you and Burgate in your back.
