In the Middle Ages Canterbury was protected by high walls and the city could be entered through eight gates. The West Gate is one of them. It was built in 1375 to give the pilgrims visiting Becket’s Shrine direct access to the main street.

Au Moyen Age Canterbury était entouré de remparts comportant huit portes. La West Gate, comme son nom l’indique, était à l’ouest. Elle fut construite en 1375 pour permettre aux pèlerins venus se recueillir sur la tombe de Thomas Becket d’accéder directement à la rue principale.
