St Augustine's Abbey was founded in 598 when King Ethelbert converted to Christianity and gave Saint Augustine, an envoy from the Pope, permission to build an abbey. By this act, Canterbury became the headquarters of the Roman Church in England. Today, the leader of the Anglican Church still wears the title of Archbishop of Canterbury. ~~ St Augustine's Abbey fut fondée en 598 quand le roi Ethelbert se convertit à la religion chrétienne et donna à Saint Augustin, en gage de sa foi, la permission de construire une abbaye. Canterbury devint ainsi le siège de l’église romaine en Angleterre et, de nos jours, le chef de l’église anglicane porte toujours le titre d’archevêque de Canterbury.
