The main streets of Chichester, North Street, South Street, East Street and West Street form a cross. This lay-out is inherited from the grid pattern of the old Roman town of Noviomagus, built around 40 AD. Noviomagus means “market place” and, at the time, a market stood in the middle of the town were the four main streets cross. In the Middle Ages the “Market Cross” was built on the site of the old Roman market place. ~~ Les quatre rues principales de Chichester, North Street, South Street, East Street et West Street se croisent à angle droit, formant une croix. Cet arrangement est hérité du plan de l’ancienne ville romaine de Noviomagus qui fut construite vers l’an 40. Noviomagus signifie “le lieu du marché” et, à l’époque, un marché se tenait à l’endroit où les quatre rues se croisent. La croix qui se dresse maintenant à la jonction date du Moyen-Age.
