The Hurlers of Saint Cleer are three stone circles placed in a line on the edge of Bodmin Moor, close to the Cheesewring. The circles date from around 1500 BC and were probably used as astronomical clocks. The name “Hurlers” comes from the legend of St Cleer who is said to have decided that, on Sunday, the local men should abandon their favourite sport, hurling, and go to church instead. The men refused and, to punish them, the saint turned them into three circles of stones so that they could play their game forever.
