After his victory at Hastings in 1066 William of Normandy had to conquer England to impose his rule. For this he used the old Roman roads and Lincoln was positioned at the junction of two major routes : «Ermine Street» and the «Fosse Way». When William reached Lincoln he found the remains of the old Roman walls and he decided to build a fortress to establish his influence. Construction started in 1069 using the old Roman walls as the outer bailey. A keep and new walls were constructed at the top of the hill developing into what is now the castle. ~~ Après sa victoire à Hastings en 1066, Guillaume le Conquérant, se devait d'étendre son autorité à toute l'Angleterre. Les anciennes voies romaines étaient l'outil de pénétration idéal vers le nord du territoire et Lincoln se trouvait à la jonction de deux voies essentielles : «Ermine Street» et la «Fosse Way». Quand Guillaume découvrit les anciennes fortifications romaines de Lincoln il décida de les utiliser pour construire une nouvelle place forte. Les travaux commencèrent en 1069, avec les remparts romains comme ceinture extérieure. Un donjon et de nouvelles murailles furent érigés au sommet de la colline pour créer le château actuel.
