Oxford has been a market town since the ninth century. It started at Carfax and spread to the adjoining streets. The construction of the Covered Market was decided in 1772 to clear the streets of the messy and unsavoury stalls. Twenty butchers were relocated in the Covered Market and the sale of meat was, from that date, forbidden in the streets. ~~~~ La ville d'Oxford a un marché depuis le IXème siècle.
