Like it had two cathedrals, Salisbury had two names : Old Sarum and Saresberie. One would think that Old Sarum is the old name and Saresberie the most recent one. Such is not the case. Saresberie is the original Norman name and it was first recorded in 1086. The name was then shortened to Sar' (with a stroke at the end of the word). The name Sar' was pronounced "Sar UM" (UM being how you say "Stroke" in Latin) and later written as "Sarum". When the new cathedral was built, its new location was called New Sarum by opposition to Old Sarum. ~~ Tout comme elle avait deux cathédrales, Salisbury avait deux noms : Old Sarum et Saresberie.
