Church Street is interesting because of three buildings of major importance in the history of Stratford. Although they were built at different times and for different purposes, these three constructions are connected. The first one, built in the 15th century is the Guild Chapel. The second one is the Old Grammar school where Shakespeare is said to have studied. The third one is the Alms Houses, built in the 16th century by the Guild of the Holy Cross for the poor of the town. Opposite the Alms Houses is Elizabeth House, a large honey coloured stone building, the meeting place of the Stratford District Council.
