The town hall was built in 1633 to replace an old market hall. The inscription “God save the King”, written on the front of the building refers to George III who was king at the time. In 1643, during the civil war, the parliamentary soldiers occupied Stratford and the Town Hall was severely damaged in an explosion. The Hall was rebuilt in 1767. The reconstruction was partly financed by David Garrick, the famous Shakespearian actor. ~~ L’hôtel de ville fut construit en 1633 en remplacement du vieux marché couvert.
