The Guild Hall, home of "The Guild of the Holy Cross" was built in 1416. It replaced an older building constructed at the time of the foundation of the guild in 1269. The role of the guild was religious, but also commercial and educational. In 1468, a school was built in the upper part of the hall by a carpenter named John Hessle. Although there is no record of it, Shakespeare probably attended it. The "Guild of the Holy Cross" was dissolved by Henry VIII. The "school" is now the property of King Edward VI School and is still used for teaching. ~~ Le Palais de la Confrérie (Guild Hall), siège de la confrérie de la Sainte Croix fut construit en 1416 en remplacement d’un bâtiment plus ancien datant de la fondation de l’ordre en 1269. La confrérie avait une vocation religieuse mais se dédiait aussi à l’éducation et au commerce. En 1468, une école fut aménagée dans l’étage supérieur. Bien qu’il n’en existe aucune preuve officielle, on considère que Shakespeare y a probablement été élève. La confrérie fut dissoute par Henry VIII et l’école est maintenant la propriété de la King Edward VI School. Elle est toujours utilisée pour l’enseignement.
