Although Stratford is the hometown of William Shakespeare the first major event dedicated to his work was only held in 1769. This festival was organised by David Garrick, a famous Shakespearian actor. An octagonal amphitheatre was erected for the occasion in Bancroft Gardens, not very far from the present location of the Swan Theatre. This first attempt was a failure and the next event related to Shakespeare had to wait until 1824 with the foundation of the Shakespeare Club and the construction a “Theatre Royal”. Fifty years later the Theatre Royal was pulled down to make room for the New Place Garden and a “Memorial Theatre” was built near the River Avon. A fire destroyed it in 1926. The Swan Theatre, also referred to as “the Royal”, was built in 1932 and is the home of The Royal Shakespeare Company. ~~ William Shakespeare est mort en 1616 et ce n’est qu’en 1769 qu’une de ses pièces fut montée dans sa ville natale dans le cadre d’un festival organisé par l’acteur David Garrick. Ce premier essai fut un échec et il fallut attendre 1824 et la fondation du Shakespeare Club pour que la ville ait une chance de revoir les pièces de son illustre fils. Un premier théâtre, le “Theatre Royal”, fut alors construit. Cinquante ans plus tard le “Royal” fut remplacé par le “Memorial Theatre”, érigé sur le bord de la rivière Avon, mais il fut détruit par un incendie en 1926. Le “Swan Theatre” actuel date de 1932. Les locaux continuent à l’appeler “le Royal” car c’est le siège de la Royal Shakespeare Company.
