The history of St. John's House is one of the most complicated but
also best documented in Warwick. The first construction on the site
was mentioned in the 12th century under the name of Saint John’s
Hospital. In 1626, the property was acquired by the Stoughton family
which transformed it into a mansion. In the 1660's the building was
enlarged to it's present size.
At the end of the 18th century it became a private school and at the
beginning of the 20th century it was used as a records office by the
army. In 1960 the house was bought by the County Council to host the
County Museum. Today it is the home of the Royal
Warwickshire Regiment Museum.
