Cuthbert was born in 635 and died in 687. This Celtic saint is often called the "Wonder-worker of England" because of the miracles attributed to his relics. For the same reason, he is also the “Travelling saint”. His popularity made him so much at risk that his followers had to keep his bones on the move travelling from town to town, church to church, cemetery to cemetery. In their many adventures the bones of Saint Cuthbert went to so many hiding places that it is difficult to follow their trace. Along the way, Cuthbert’s protectors collected the head of another saint which was put in the coffin for safe keeping. For this reason Cuthbert is often represented holding Saint Oswald’ head in his hand. ~~ Cuthbert naquit en 635 et mourut en 687. Ce saint celte fut souvent surnommé "Travailleur prodige d'Angleterre" à cause du nombre de miracles attribué à ses reliques. Il est aussi connu comme le "Saint voyageur". Il était si populaire que, pour fuir les excès de ses admirateurs, ses fidèles devaient constamment déplacer ses ossements. Ses reliques voyageaient donc de ville en ville, d'église en église, de cimetière en cimetière. Les os de Cuthbert occupèrent tant de cachettes qu'il est difficile de suivre leurs aventures. Au cours de leur périple les protecteurs de Cuthbert récupérèrent le crâne d'un autre saint qui fut mis dans son cercueil pour le protéger des convoitises des chasseurs de reliques. Pour cette raison Cuthbert est souvent représenté tenant dans sa main la tête de Saint Oswald.
