When Henry Peckham, who was a wine merchant, decided to have his house built, he insisted on having ostriches carved on the columns in front of the building. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find a sculptor who knew what an ostrich looked like. The result is that the birds on top of the columns look more like dodos than ostriches and the local people often call Pallant House the “Dodo House”. ~~ Henry Peckham était un négociant en vin.
