The native inhabitants of the Sequoia area lived here, in the Kaweah River Valley. They were the Monachee people, a nomadic Indian tribe who camped in the Foothills during the summer season. When the first European settlers arrived, they had been preceded by smallpox and other diseases they had brought to the new continent. They never met the Monachee who had all died from infection.
