Saint George’s Church and the surrounding area were destroyed in a series of bombings carried out by the German Luftwaffe from May 31 to June 6, 1942 in what was called the “Baedeker raids”. These raids were named after the German Baedeker Tourist Guide to Britain which was used to select targets of “strategically unimportant but picturesque cities in England”. Baron Gustav Braun von Sturm, one of the planners of the attacks, had declared "We shall go out and bomb every building in Britain marked with three stars in the Baedeker Guide”. The cities attacked were : Exeter, Bath, Norwich, York and Canterbury.
