In Roman times, Lincoln was surrounded by a wall. Access to the town was through four gateways. The Newport Arch was the northern gateway into the city. It is now the only Roman arch in England through which traffic still passes. Only foundations and fragments of the other three Roman gateways remain. Most of the wall has disappeared, part of it having been used by the locals for the construction of their houses. Such was the case with the Newport Cottage, next to the Newport Arch.

A l'époque romaine Lincoln avait des remparts.
